Intravenous Vitamin Therapy is the infusion of vitamins and minerals directly into the vein. It is administered through a drip system as this stops air getting into the bloodstream or directly using a butterfly cannula.
It is one of the fastest ways to deliver fluids around the body.
The drip consists of a solution of vitamins and minerals called Myer’s Cocktail. The name is taken from the physician John Myers who invented the cocktail more than 30 years ago. Intravenous Vitamin Therapy contains magnesium, calcium, various B vitamins (B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B9 and B12). IV therapy also supplies vitamin c to the body.
In preparation for Intravenous Vitamin Therapy it is important that the patient drinks plenty of water beforehand. If you have a condition such as a kidney disorder that prevents you from drinking water before the procedure check with your practitioner beforehand. If you have any allergies it is vital that you inform a member of staff before the procedure begins. Wear loose fitting and comfortable clothing as this allows staff to easily monitor your vital signs. Blankets and additional water will be provided and it is asked that the patient refrain from wearing makeup, perfume or any kind of body fragrance. Patient can read a book or magazine while the procedure is being carried out but are asked to refrain from using their mobile phone or any electronic device unless the staff allow you to do so.
After the treatment the patient should start to feel the benefits straight away. If you are not feeling well or have a question inform a member of staff straight away. A dressing will be placed over the area where the treatment was carried out. This should be kept on for a minimum of 30 minutes. If you have any questions ask a member of staff. You can ring the clinic during office hours if you have any further questions following the procedure.
While it is unusual to experience side effects sometimes there are some minor complications. The most common of these include pain, irritation and bruising around the injection area. Other complications such as a patient being allergic to a substance can occur, but this very rare. In general, IV Therapy is very safe and will have minimal side effects.
This treatment is administered by our GMC Doctors only.
